Project Natale Jazzes Up Bowie's Town Green Park

Project Natale played some great jazz this weekend as part of the Saturday Old Town Bowie Summer Concert Series in Town Green Park. This was at least the group's seventh year playing the venue. The crowd was a bit on the light side, but this is a popular vacation week and 2pm on a Saturday afternoon during the summer is not the best time for a concert.

Check out the following short videos from their performance.

Russell Kirk on sax, and Joe Natale (brother of Lou) on upright bass. Carl Cornwell usually plays sax for Project Natale, but he wasn't at Saturday's concert. Joe is the music director for the group, and he wrote some of the songs performed last Saturday.

Food Network Visits Old Bowie Town Grille

The Old Bowie Town Grille announced yesterday on its e-mail newsletter that two producers for a new Food Network series visited the restaurant for possible casting for an episode that would film later this year. The show is seeking family run restaurants in need of a makeover. The show sounds familiar to Restaurant Makeover, a Canadian show that is no longer in production.

The following note came from the Old Bowie Town Grille newsletter:

Yes, you heard it right! Two producers for a new Food Network Restaurant Makeover Series visited the Old Bowie Town Grille this morning for potential casting in the show that would shoot this summer and fall. They are looking for family run restaurants that are in need of a boost in customers, good reviews and overall revenue. We have managed to hang in there for over 4 years, but our remote location sometimes works to our disadvantage. Just the publicity alone from the show would provide a significant boost. The visit went really well and we hope to hear back from them soon. If you were a Celebrity Food Network Chef, what changes would you recommend?"

Weekly News from the Bowie Star

There is a lot of interesting news in this week's Bowie Star.

The Bowie community came together in the wake of Sunday's storm. Joe Iskow told the Bowie Star that multiple people helped him after a tree fell on his parents' garage on Superior Lane, and the Whitehall Pool & Tennis Club opened its doors to members of Bowie Swim & Racquet Club after downed trees forced the temporary closure of BSR.

A robbery occurred last Sunday night on Governors Bridge Road in Bowie two days after an attempted robbery occurred on Knowledge Lane. Guns were involved in both incidents.

High Bridge Elementary, Benjamin Tasker and Samuel Ogle schools have been placed on the state's "school improvement" list for failing to meet Maryland's reading and math proficiency targets for two consecutive years. Northview Elementary did not meet state targets for the first year in 2010.

Bowie mother and daughter Margaret and Fiona Moodie discuss running for public office.

The National Night Out crime prevention event will be held next Tuesday at Allen Pond Park.

Severe Storm Causes Downed Trees and Power Outages

A cold front brought a severe storm to Bowie this afternoon. Several trees were knocked down, and many residents and businesses are without power. Some sections of town seem worse than others. The Somerset, Meadowbrook and Whitehall neighborhoods all seem hard hit. Power is still off at Hilltop Plaza, Bowie Plaza and Whitehall Plaza. I saw the poor guy at Crab Galley trying to save his inventory by loading it into his refrigerated truck. My son and I took a late night drive around town, and we did not see a single BGE truck.

The storm also caused WSSC to issue yet another water restriction for its customers after a pumping station in Montgomery County lost power.

We were in Waldorf when the storm first hit. We saw the thermometer in the car go from 100 degrees to 80 in about 10 minutes. The temperature went as low as 72 during our drive back to Bowie.

In his rush to get inside, the victim left his keys in the lock.

Serial Killer's Mother/Daughter Profile may Match Bowie Murder

According to a report by WUSA Channel 9, the murder of Bowie resident Vilma Artis Butler may match the mother/daughter profile of the 2009 Largo killings allegedly committed by a serial killer who is currently in custody. Butler's daughter was not at home on the night of the murder because she had left to attend a training class. A family friend is speculating that the killer may have intended to kill both Butler and her daughter, but Butler's daughter had a change in her routine that caused her to be away from home. Click here to see the WUSA report.

Details about the suspect in custody are slowly emerging. Another WUSA report reveals details of an Accokeek home invasion in 2008 that is linked to the suspected serial killer. Click here to see the WUSA report.

Serial Murderer May be Responsible for 2008 Bowie Killing

Vilma Patrice Artis Butler was shot and killed in 2008, and her Bowie home was set on fire in an apparent attempt to cover-up her murder. Prince George's County Police are now saying that a serial killer allegedly responsible for four 2009 Largo murders is also suspected in Butler's death.

Karen Lofton and her daughter Karissa were murdered in their Largo home in January, 2009, and Delores Dewitt and her daughter Ebony were found dead in a stolen car nearly two months later and less than two miles from the Lofton's home in Largo. Police searched for a link between the Lofton and Dewitt murders due to similarities in the two crimes, but a 2009 investigation by an FBI profiler erroneously concluded that the two cases were not linked.

Police announced just yesterday that there was a person of interest in the four Largo murders who they considered to be a serial murderer, and today Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto Hylton was using phrases like "overwhelming evidence" and "not your run-of-the-mill criminal."

Police say that the suspect may also be responsible for murders outside of Maryland.

Crime Down for D.C. Region but Up for Bowie

The Metropolitan Council of Government released its Annual Report on Crime and Crime Control 2009 last week. The good news for the D.C. region is that the more serious crimes (known as the part 1 crimes) are down nearly 8 percent from 2008 to 2009. However, the statistics reported by the City of Bowie Police Department show a 12 percent year-over-year increase for Bowie.
The Maryland jurisdictions included in the study had an 11% decrease in part 1 crimes, compared with 6.2% for D.C. and 4.0 for Virginia. The report credits cooperation among law enforcement agencies as one of the contributing factors for the decrease.
Continued cooperation and communication among agencies throughout the NCR will further enable jurisdictions to work toward continued reductions in major crimes. The use of innovative technologies, including License Plate Readers, and computers and GPS in police cars, as well as other enhanced data sharing technologies available to officers, such as LInX, has enabled the NCR to improve its crime reduction efforts during this period of economic downturn.

Parts of Bowie under a Water Restriction

A mandatory water restriction was put in place today for all WSSC water customers in Prince George's and Montgomery counties while WSSC performs emergency repairs on a 96 inch water main. Customers are being asked to follow these guidelines.
