Charity Rock and Roll Concert at Bowie Playhouse

The City of Bowie Arts Committee is sponsoring a night of rock music at the Bowie Playhouse on Friday, August 20th. Three up-and-coming local bands will be featured, and the proceeds will be donated to the International Bird Research Rescue Center.

The rock concert is the first of three music events planned by the arts committee. A jazz concert will take place in January, and a hip-hop event is planned for next March.

The concerts are the brainchild of arts committee member Owen Adams. Adams wanted to establish music events to showcase local talent and music that people wouldn't normally hear in Bowie. The event is described on the City of Bowie Web site as follows:

“Rock n’ Roll at the Playhouse”
The first of three music concerts aimed at college-age young adults and their young-at-heart friends will be August 20. The concert will showcase up and coming local artists from the metro D.C./Maryland area. For more information, contact Andra Berry at aberry@cityofbowie.org or Annette Esterheld at aesterheld@cityofbowie.org.
Adams became a member of the Bowie Arts Committee after graduating high school in 2008, and he is currently enrolled in a music program at the University of Maryland. Adams is known for his classical piano talents. He performed at the Haiti benefit concert at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts last February, and Adams' band Stravagant has performed at Bowiefest.

Adams said that he chose bands for the first event that had a good sound and a good following. Friday's rock concert will feature Monteclair (formerly known as Question the Hearing), Suffering Messiah and Adams' own band, Stravagant. Click here to listen to Monteclair performing "Less Days, Less Days," and watch the following video to see Stravagant performing "Better Than" at the 2009 Bowiefest festival at Allen Pond Park. Owen Adams is the musician playing the keyboard in the video.

The doors open at 7:00pm Friday night, and the first band will go on at 8:30. Admission is $5. Cetrone's Pizza is co-sponsoring the event, and pizza will be available for purchase between performances.

Carolyn Malachi at Allen Pond Photo Gallery

Below are photos of the Carolyn Malachi Concert at Allen Pond Park, June 20, 2010. I have also included photos of the Prince George's County Police Rhythm in Blues Band. There was another opening act called the Color Performing Arts Group, but I arrived after they left the stage.

A larger set of photos from this event can be seen on Facebook by clicking here, but there's a short video below that you won't find on Facebook.

Bowie Skate Park Photo Gallery

I snapped a few photos of skateboarders at the Allen Pond Skate Park Sunday after the Skate Don't Hate skateboard competition. The event ended earlier than expected. I overheard that as many as 30 people who registered for the event didn't show up to compete, but I did find a few skateboarders still hanging around after the competition.

Although the concert brochure describes the music as "Blues," Malachi really has a style all her own. The following bio for Carolyn Malachi can be found on her Myspace page.

Hailing from the Prince George’s County/Washington, DC /Baltimore region, vocalist, producer and über smart chick Carolyn Malachi’s introduces music lovers to "Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods." She calls her brand of music "haute eclectic soular blues." Malachi, who is the great-granddaughter of legendary jazz pianist John Malachi, has created her own modern infectious gumbo of jazz, hip hop, and spoken word. ROTSC II is the stirring and genre bending follow-up to her 2008 debut "Revenge of the Smart Chicks." The first project spawned a movement, blog and the non-profit Smart Chicks Inc. The organization is dedicated to developing visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts.

Carolyn is currently a resident artist at BloomBars, a community arts space in Washington, DC.and the recent recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council 2010 Individual Artist Award.

Check out this video of a February, 2010 Carolyn Malachi performance.
