Carnival, May, 1973

The pictures below were taken at a carnival in May, 1973. The carnival took place in the parking lot of a shopping center that had a Giant and a Zayre department store. Was it Free State in Bowie, or is it possible that the carnival was in New Carrollton? The Bowie Blade did cover stories from surrounding communities including New Carrollton.

Note the Giant sign in the background.

Another picture with the Giant sign in the background.

The "ZAYRE" sign is visible in this night shot.

I can't make out the names of the other stores on the left.

Is there a hill like this in the back of Free State?

Note the parking lot light on the top right side of this picture.

This picture was not taken with the others. It was part of a set of pictures of a carnival in the parking lot of Free State Mall. Note the difference in the style of light between this picture and the one above it. This is what makes me think that the May, 1973 carnival was in New Carrollton.

These pictures were posted as part of the Bowie Blade Pic Project, I've been posting pictures taken by Arnie Miles for the Bowie Blade between 1973 and 1975.

  1. This does appear to be the parking lot on the left hand side of 450, entering new carrollton. There used to be a zayres and giant in that shopping center. After there was a chesapeake bay seafood house. If you went up the hill there was a gas station and a little further toys r us.
